Stop Driving While Intoxicated

What is Impaired Driving?

ALCOHOL
PRESCRIPTION DRUGS
MEDICATIONS
ILLEGAL DRUGS
MIXING ALCOHOL and other DRUGS

Drunk Driving is NOT a Laughing Matter.
Each Year DWI kills over 10,000 individuals
and causes over 1/2 million injuries
- many serious and permanently disabled.

82% of fatal crashes are caused by drunk or high drivers

DWI has catastrophic consequences for both victims and drivers….

Don’t operate a motor vehicle while under the influence
of alcohol or drugs,

even a small amount significantly increases
the probability of an accident, injury or death.

Every year, 10.3 million people reported
driving under the influence of illicit drugs.
Every day, almost 300,000 people drive under the influence of alcohol.
There is no safe level for driving after drinking or using other drugs.  Although we have made great progress in reducing DWI,
there are still 1.4 million DUI arrests each year.

Don’t even think about driving if you have had alcohol or other drugs!

Driving while intoxicated or impaired driving, whether by alcohol, other drugs, or alcohol and other drugs combined, is one of the greatest health and safety problems in America. It is by far one of the largest single criminal causes of accidents and death throughout the country, and is one of the most preventable social problems we have,

At highest risk are young people. DWI is the NUMBER ONE KILLER of youth under the age of 25. Those between the ages of 16 and 19 are in the most danger. One study found that older drivers (20 years old or older) with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.15% or higher were about 100 times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident than those with no alcohol in their blood. But 16-to-20 year olds with such a BAC were 400 times more likely to die than same-aged drivers who had not been drinking.

One study of seriously injured drivers at a trauma center showed that 51% of those tested showed positive for illegal drugs, as compared to 34% that tested positive for being under the influence of alcohol.
They tested positive for marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine,  amphetamine, benzodiazepines, and a host of opioid based prescription drugs including oxycontin and hydrocodone.

Medications like Valium, Prozac, Klonopin and Xanax can be lethal when mixed with alcohol and they most certainly affects someone's driving ability.  Xanax is sedating and when mixed with alcohol, a depressant, can cause lack of coordination, mental fogginess and drowsiness. In fact when Xanax and alcohol are mixed, the user can experience extreme cognitive and physical impairments.

The mixing of alcohol and drugs is a huge factor of why we have seen an increase of women in DWI arrests, especially involved in "wrong way" car accidents.

Did you know that every 90 seconds, someone is injured in a drunk or drugged driving accident?  Drugged driving impairs motor skills, reaction time and judgment, and negatively affects driving skills. Driving While Intoxicated leaves hundreds of thousands of victims…. It doesn’t just destroy cars – it destroys lives.

Remember that driving while under the influence of alcohol, prescription drugs, or marijuana is always a no-win situation.

DWI is a deadly choice.  Never allow yourself to be the Passenger in a car of a drunk driver! If your ride home has been drinking, please, please, please do NOT get in the car with them. Your first responsibility is to your health your life and your family.   Always Choose wisely.

Alcohol and drugs don't just impair driving, they impair performance, reaction time and cognitive skills of the driver.  Since driving involves such basic skills as attention, judgment, perception, decision making, physical reaction and coordination, drivers under the influence of any drug pose road safety hazards and lead to more fatal and non-fatal accidents. DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!

DWI IS A CRIME !

Remember: DWI/DWAI is a crime that will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law – but it is not just a crime, it is a deadly choice that destroys thousands of individuals and families every year.

If you kill or cause an injury to another person because of an alcohol or other drug-related  violation, you can be convicted of criminally negligent homicide, vehicular manslaughter or assault. These carry a fine of thousands of dollars and a maximum jail term of 15 years. If you drive while your license is suspended or revoked, you face a mandatory fine of $200 to $1000, and a mandatory jail term or probation. If impaired or intoxicated when you are arrested, the maximum mandatory fine is $5,000, and the vehicle can be seized. Liability insurance may not cover the cost of injuries and damage from a traffic crash. You could be sued for thousands of dollars and you would find it difficult and expensive to buy liability insurance for several years. Besides fines and surcharges, you could also face costly legal fees, and of course with a DWI, you could have a criminal record, which makes it harder to get a job or move forward in your job.

The number of teens killed in traffic crashes increased nearly 20% during summer months. Young drivers have high fatal crash rates because of limited driving experience and immaturity  that can often result in high-risk behavior behind the wheel. Add alcohol or drugs to the equation, and the result is a much greater probability of injury or death!

Beat the odds:
  • o No drinking alcohol or using drugs.
  • o Buckle up.
  • o Slow down and respect the speed limit.
  • o No phone calls or text messaging.
  • o Be vigilant to recognize danger on the road.
  • o Reduce nighttime and weekend driving.
  • o Limit the number of passengers, and,
  • o Limit how and when you ride with other teen drivers - especially
       inexperienced ones.

One study,
published in Public Health Reports,
also found the share of drivers under the influence of drugs in fatal motor vehicle crashes who tested positive for
marijuana reached 36.9 percent,

and many are using multiple drugs.

Choosing Your Path of Life.  This book is simply, about enhancing your quality of life. For each phase of life you enter, the quality of your life should strengthen, not weaken. It should increase, not decrease. It should expand the positive features and attributes of your life, not shrink or contract them.
This book is about helping everyone find the path to a better Quality of Life. We, at TeenSoulPower, want to help you to identify what makes a happy and healthy life. More importantly, we want to help you to make a fulfilling life. Most of us think we know how to do this, but the truth is that if you do not know how then your life is in free-float. It is moving ahead - but may not be making any progress, it may be aimless, drifting, with neither rhyme nor reason, with neither purpose nor goals, set adrift and vulnerable to the whims of fate.   Available at Smashwords:  $1.99.

The Marijuana Highway:   A MUST READ for ALL Parents and Teens!  The premise of "The Marijuana Highway" is that marijuana is a powerful, toxic and addictive psychoactive drug.
The Team at TeenSoulPower has reviewed - literally - hundreds of articles and studies on marijuana. Not one study was found that even hints that marijuana is a protective factor for positive youth development. Not one study was found that states that marijuana use supports healthy families. Not one study was found that concludes that marijuana use builds strong communities. Not one study was found that has proven that marijuana is a safe drug. In fact, overwhelmingly, the findings are exactly the opposite in all four cases. Everyone wants a happy and healthy life. Many have found, though, that the quality of life they wanted never materialized, simply because a friend said “Try this, it won’t hurt you."   Available at Smashwords:  $1.99.

Sex and the Single Teen:  Sex has become a "distraction of life." The goal of this book is to refute the social pressures to rush into sexual relationships. It is to negate the hype and illusions of sex, and to explore and provide a rationale that strengthens resolve to wait - to wait until the time, the circumstances, the emotions, the psychology and the spiritual factors are all aligned.  It is to help you avoid the "Sex Trap."  Sex is a life choice. As with all choices it can be positive - but it can be very, very damaging.  The material is as significant and critical as any other issue or topic can possibly be.

     Available at Smashwords.   $1.99.

Alcohol,Drugs and Teens: The purpose of this book is to help people improve the quality of their lives by avoiding one of the greatest health problems: drug abuse. Addiction is the #1 Health Problem in America, and 9-out-of-10 addicts began using alcohol or drugs before age 18. Not one teen ever said, "When I grow up I want to be an addict."  Addiction is definitely a process of morbidity, of making people sick.  It is definitely a disease.  It affects mind, body, emotion and soul. And addiction always begins with simple use. If one never smokes one does not develop addiction to nicotine. It is the act of using a substance that potentiates the addiction potential.
This book spells out the nature and problems of drugs and recommends prevention as the best medicine.

Available at Smashwords.      $1.99
