TEEN SOUL POWER
“I’ve lost my way.”
Drivers often get lost. They get lost in a new city, on an unfamiliar expressway, or out in the countryside. Hikers get lost on the back trails. Boaters get lost on the vast expanse of water. Even lawyers get lost in the vast volume of law and regulation. Everyone gets lost occasionally. Everyone knows how it feels to be lost at some point. But people have tools like maps or GPS devices to help them find their true direction – true north, and so not everyone is doomed to stay lost. Similarly, people sometimes find themselves “lost” in their personal lives. Confronted with numerous decisions, with issues and barriers, with hardships and bad luck, and too often with suffering the consequences of poor choices – a person may wake one day feeling “lost.” But again, with the right tools, no one is doomed to stay lost. Recently in a conversation, one man in his twenties laughed nostalgically and while looking back at his difficult years, he commented, "I lost my way." He understands. He had been “lost” but now found his way home. The truth is that at one time or another we've all lost our way. When is doubt, when feeling adrift, turn to your “internal compass.” It’s a built-in guidance system - an inner guidance system, an invisible compass, hidden deep inside. We each have an internal compass – an inner mechanism with the ability to find the answers we need, to find our way in life when we're lost – to find our way back home. It is called a conscience. It gives us an inner set of what’s right and wrong. It is a soft voice within, a guide for our values and morality. Rousseau once said, "Conscience is the voice of the soul..." But today many have “killed” their conscience, or at least override it with an inflated sense of pride or self-centeredness, or power or greed. Ask your conscience for advice, and then listen… it is naturally resourceful and wise... and is the essence of your internal compass. If one consults their compass for guidance – their deepest, innermost conscience, their inner voice, they’ll know what to do. Most answers you need are already there – deep inside. It is a gift – if we listen. |
The voice of conscience is so delicate that it is easy to stifle it;
but it is also so clear that it is impossible to mistake it.
-- Madame de Stael
Your best friend and worst enemy are both in this room right now.
It's not your neighbor right or left - and it's not God or the devil - it's you.
-- Edwin Louis Cole
Conscience allows us to do two things:
Pass judgment on ourselves,
and approve or condemn our own conduct.
-- Edwin Louis Cole
Conscience is God present in man.
-- Victor Hugo
Conscience is the root of all true courage;
if a man would be brave, let him obey his conscience.
--- James Freeman Clarke
